Your smile will stay strong and healthy when you make preventive care a priority. Our Federal Way, WA, dentist, Dr. Todd Yoshino, explains preventative dnetistryhow you can avoid dental problems.

Reduce your risk of gum disease and tooth decay by spending five minutes daily on oral hygiene

No matter how busy you are, you probably have five minutes to devote to brushing and flossing your teeth every day. These basic oral hygiene tasks remove cavity-causing plaque from your teeth and prevent plaque from becoming tartar. Once hard tartar forms on your teeth, your gum disease risk increases.

For best results, brush for a full two minutes in the morning and evening. Before or after your morning or evening brushing session, floss your teeth to remove the plaque that forms between them.

Avoid or limit sugary or carbohydrate-rich snacks

Prevent tooth decay by staying away from foods and drinks that contain sugar, or at least limit them. When sugar comes in contact with the plaque on teeth, acids that eat tooth enamel form. Snacks like pretzels and potato chips contain carbohydrates that are converted to sugar, making them equally bad for your teeth. Healthier snacks, such as vegetables, fruit or cheese are a better option.

Remember that your teeth aren't invincible

Your teeth are very strong, but they can break when exposed to hard foods and objects. Chewing on ice or hard foods, or using your teeth to open a bottle or package, may cause cracks or breaks in your teeth. Once a crack or break occurs, you'll need a dental crown.
